“Emex” Decorative Plaster:Surface preparation for application
Preparation of the support concrete, masonry, float plaster, burnt plaster or premixed, etc. surfaces represent a necessary stage previous to application because it has a decisive influence upon the quality and durability of the coating. Therefore:
- The concrete or new plasters (inclusively repairs) require minimum 28 days for hardening and drying before application,); if these conditions are not met the product’s resistance will be damaged and will cause exfoliation and blisters, and the colored paints may suffer chromatic changes.
- The plastered surfaces are to be verified by knocking before applying the product; if they prove to be inappropriate (sound empty) the plaster will be completely removed until reaching the base and the surfaces will be reshaped with binder of the same class as the initial one;
- Do not introduce a large quantity of lime into the plasters;
- Before applying the product fix eventual wholes or gaps or any other imperfections using “Emex LQ” Spatula Mass for Repairs
For surfaces which before had been painted:
- Old wasted paint or the ones that lack adherence will be completely removed through the use of “Emex CM Cleaner” Varnish Remover Solution or the “Emex PC Eco” Ecological Varnish Remover.
- Old layers can be removed by polishing with mechanical brushes or by burning.
- Every type of old coating removal operation will be followed by polishing.
- Areas affected by mold will be cleaned and impregnated with “Emex” Forte Sanitizer;
- Clean the impurities and degrease the surfaces to be covered with “Emex” Decorative Plaster.
- The surfaces have to be smooth, plain and dry.
- Metallic inclusions will be necessarily covered with “EMEX” ALKYD ANTICORROSIVE BASE COAT or the “Neomatt” Economic Base Coat.
- It is absolutely necessary to apply one of the plaster primers on the new surfaces (repairs included) which you can find on the Base Coat and Water Primers.

“Emex” Structured Decorative Plaster: Application
The product will be applied on the support surface only after its corresponding preparation based on the instructions from the previous tab or Data Sheet, no matter if the surface to be covered is new or had been painted before with other compatible products.
The plasters are to be applied with the trowel and structured with the plastic float.
The optimum application system for the decorative plasterworks comprises the following stages:
- The product is prepared according to the instructions.
- The surface is prepared according to the instructions.
- Apply “Emex” Quartz Base Coat Primer, or “Emex” Quartz Base Coat Silicon Primer (according to the type of plasterwork) for creating necessary anchor points for higher adherence of the plaster on the support.
- Apply a first layer of dispersed waster base emulsion paint “EMEX” for indoor or outdoor use (you may choose from the Washable Paint page), having the same color as the plaster, approximately 12-24 hours after applying the base coat primer.
- Apply the plaster using the stainless steel trowel in a layer corresponding to the particles’ size (1,2-3 mm.). For bigger surfaces we recommend applying plaster on the entire surfaces without pausing to avoid inadequacies.
- For obtaining a striped structure prepare the surface with circular and linear movements according to the plaster type and the desired pattern, using a float after the product had dried. An exception is “EMEX” Foundation Marbled Plaster, which can be applied only by using the stainless steel trowel in a layer as thick as the particles dimension allows it.
- In case of “Emex” Textured Paint preparation is done using patterned rollers to allow the applied material to dry faster.
- The optimum application temperature for the product is between 5 si 30°C, and relative humidity is max. 65%.
Do not use adhesives such as “Aracet” for the preparation of primers nor add them into the plasters, no matter their type.
“Emex” Decorative Plaster, and all its subtypes are manufactures to ensure a high adherence and the best covering power without any kind of additives.
These instructions especially refer to structured decorative plaster.
